The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) helps people to realize the benefits of their countries’ endowments of oil, gas and minerals. We do this through technical advice, advocacy, applied research, policy analysis, and capacity development. We work with innovative agents of change within government ministries, civil society, the media, legislatures, the private sector, and international institutions to promote accountable and effective governance in the extractive industries.
NRGI seeks a special assistant (SA) to support the chief operating officer and NRGI’s leadership team. This role will provide critical support to organizational growth and development, Governing Board and Advisory Council engagement, strategic planning, program management, and learning. The special assistant will interact with staff across NRGI, Advisory Council and Governing Board members, and NRGI partners from civil society, government, the private sector, philanthropy and more. The special assistant will report to the COO, but will provide engagement across NRGI’s leadership, working as part of a collaborative, fast-paced team.
The successful candidate will be a skillful listener, diplomat, facilitator, creative problem solver, and effective catalyst of collaboration. She or he must be able to read complex interpersonal and political dynamics and apply that understanding to ensure the integrity of work and relationships with the leadership team. This new role is an exciting opportunity to support innovative and effective management.
Support to NRGI strategy and planning processes: The special assistant will provide support to NRGI’s annual budgeting and strategic planning processes. This will include preparing and staffing twice-yearly meetings of the Strategic Program Committee and the leadership team, executive office strategic advancement, decision making and communication, and the collection and use of information to improve organizational learning processes.
Support to global engagements: The special assistant will provide support to the COO in her role in international initiatives and advocacy, including the Open Government Partnership and Publish What You Pay.
Executive office liaison: The special assistant will proactively conceive of ways to support and strengthen NRGI’s organizational culture, international communications, strategic advancement and coordination. This may include, but is not limited to, deputizing the special assistant to liaise with thematic and regional programs and respond to questions, concerns and opportunities for synergy.
Governing board liaison: The special assistant will support the executive office to prepare Governing Board materials (three times per year) and work to strengthen board engagement. The special assistant will work closely with the assistant secretary to the board who is responsible for board minutes and legal matters (NRGI’s in-house Attorney), and the Executive Assistant who provides logistical support.
Advisory Council liaison: The special assistant will support engagement with NRGI’s Advisory Council, including proactively ensuring AC members contribute to and are engaged with NRGI’s work.
Special Initiatives: The special assistant will support the design of special initiatives related to NRGI’s organizational strategy, such as civic space and civil society engagement, program strategy review and redesign, and engagement with China, among others.
The special assistant will provide support to other areas of organizational growth, development and effectiveness as needed.
